Mermaids are called Sirena or Sireno sometimes seems to be a Siyokoy or paired with it. It is one of our so called mere folks and sometimes called as the guardians of water. Guardians of Water are part of fish with human part dwelling in the waters which is one of the beliefs of Filipino mere folk. One of the most popular mermaid character here in Philippines is Dyesebel.

It is also known  that Sirena has beautiful voices and can captivate and hypnotize males, especially fisherman.  They would often sing and enchant them, distracting them that cause them shipwreck and get near to the danger of the boat.
