Congratulations! Myrene Bruno Somejo Awarded by NDRRMC Gawad Kalasag For Saving Her Sister.

It was morning of March 20, 2013 when a defining moment happened which starts in a silent and simple picnic. Myrene Bruno Somejo and a 7 year old sister Neri Joy who were just walking along the beach of Barangay Dalacpan and both joined their friends in a “rakit” a travel and floating play/adventure and went into deeper waters.

Later, the friends happiness and laughter was exchanged of screams as one of the Somejo’s friends Kikay Naval glided off the raft, fell in the water and unexpectedly pulled Neri Joy with her.

“The waters were so deep I wished I had not brought her (Neri Joy) along,” she said.

Despite of the risk and endanger, Myrene swam towards her sister and friend using her swimming skills showing handy as she control to save the two from drowning.

She was interviewed by The Star which she said ” Mahal na mahal ko po ang kapatid ko (I love my sister very much).”

Now, Myrene was one of the awardees, not long ago honored during the 16th Gawad Kalasag in Camp Aguinaldo. This event is held to know and recognize institutions and individuals who bestowed to disaster risk reduction awareness and have shown courage and example to fellow youth in times of emergencies.

She added “I was nervous. I thought I would die,”

This unselfish and astonishing act of being the ‘salva vida’ to Kikay and Neri showed the strong and firm settle and unconditional love and concern for her sister not minding the risk she had to take just to save her sister’s life.

According to Gawad Kalasag “Despite her young age, Myrene’s presence of mind and strong determination to save her sister and her sister’s friend demonstrated her heroic spirit,”

Meanwhile, Myrene’s father, Rene, has nothing to say because of the tremendous accident but that she is so proud of her daughter’s brave feature.

“I am thankful that she was able to save lives. I thought I would lose my younger daughter,” Rene added.

Myrene said she would not hesitate to take the risk and to be in danger again it it means to help another and those in need.

Evidence of Her courageous act and selfless attitude is that she is now a member of the local water search and rescue team which she signed up for she can save lives continuously and make a great change and big difference.
