A feline figure of a cat 2000 years ago was discovered in the hillside of southern Peru, according to the Ministry of Culture. It measures 37 meters or 121 feet across in the part of Nazca Lines, a collection of many mysterious artworks 250 miles south of Lima.

The catlike image is the latest discovery amongst the carvings of animals and plants who was also discovered between the towns of Nazca and Palpa.

Ministry’s press released said that, “The figure was barely visible and was about to disappear as a result of its location on a fairly steep slope and the effects of natural erosion.”

“The discovery shows ,once again, the rich and varied cultural legacy of this site”, the ministry stated.

This Nazca Lines were discovered in 1927 by a Peruvian aerial surveyor. Images such as hummingbird, a monkey and an orca was found at the said site. Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa was designated by the UNESCO as the World Heritage Site since 1994.

This 2000-year-old cat etching was believed to be older than any other figures found in Nazca.

“Its quite striking that we’re still finding new figures but we also know that there are more to be found”, said Johny Isla, Peru’s chief archeologist for Nazca Lines.

The arid climate in Peru preserved the Nazca Lines but because of erosion and human activities it impose threats to the glyph’s survival.
